Often skaters of non-European descent are underrepresented in the figure skating community. This website strives to support the growing population of minority athletes in the sport, so that people of all ethnicities will be encouraged to pursue their dreams in figure skating.
Find book reviews, athlete birthdays, competition highlights, profiles of leaders in each discipline, and other useful links. Additionally, each month BlackIce is spotlighting a minority skater whose achievements might inspire others to join in the sport.
This month, and certainly in the years to come, is novice men’s competitor Theron James. To read about him, or to nominate a minority skater who is climbing the competitive ranks and/or advancing the sport of figure skating, check out the BlackIce.com.
Particularly interesting is the “Did You Know” page. It lists interesting and little-known facts about figure skaters. For example: “Surya Bonaly was a pair skater.”
Also check out the “Legends” page. The premier bio is of Mabel Fairbanks, the first African American woman inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
