The Riedell R3 is a fairly popular skate package. Its features are the lowest level of Riedell quality, but these are great for beginners.

The Riedell R3 is an inexpensive entry-level roller skate at around $100. It features the synthetic R3 boot, a PowerDyne Nylon plate with metal trucks, Radar Cayman wheels, and Kwik ABEC-3 bearings. The R3 is available in black (sizes 1 to 14) and in white (sizes 1 to 11).

Advantages of the Riedell R3

This boot is very versatile and forgiving. It has virtually no break-in time. These skates can me skated for three hours right out of the box with no discomfort. The height of the heel is higher than most speed-type boots, but comfortable. The heel is ideal for the transition a beginner skater makes between rental skates and speed skating boots. For beginners, the plate is adequate and the trucks are adjustable. Nylon plates means that this skate is relatively light. The speed strap across the ankle is useful for keeping the skates on with the preferred tightness. As far as Riedell packages go, this is as affordable as it gets.

Disadvantages of the Riedell R3

The insole of the R3 is nothing more than a piece of felt. Skaters who need arch support will have to provide their own separate insoles. The vinyl does not stretch as much as leather. The Radar Cayman wheels are very grippy and slow. The plastic hubs offer more friction than is ideal, even on a beginner skate. This might be good for a beginning skater, but experienced skaters will run these wheels flat in no time. The lacing on this boot does not go all the way down the front of the boot, which means less flexibility in lacing fit. The nylon plates are not as responsive as metal ones. The bearings on this package are of the lowest quality available. They do the job, but will be blown away by higher rated ABECs or any of the Swiss brand of bearings.

Who Should Buy the Riedell R3

One has to remember the purpose of this skate. It is an inexpensive option for a beginner. Skaters who plan to skate casual open skates will probably be happy with the R3. However, a competitive skater should save their money and invest in something with more quality. This skate is not a good idea for serious jam, speed, or derby skaters. There are many skaters who did not have this advice and have a pair of R3s, worn for less than a year, as their outdoor skates and a much better upgraded pair of skates for their serious indoor skating endeavors.
