Rosemary Drisdelle :
Hi Timbre,
I was really intrigued by the the post about anti-doping: not that I've been looking for it, but I don't think I've heard of a doping scandal in skating. Do figure and speed skaters commonly use performance enhancing drugs?

Timbre Beck-Murphy :
Good question. Both figure skaters and speed skaters are tested at USADA's will. It is very rare that we hear about it because tests rarely come back positive in this -- and the other sports as well. The ones that do come back are sensationalized until the public thinks there's a serious problem. Doping itself is very serious. But these athletes train nearly every day for years to reach their goals. They know they can be tested at any time, even after the competitive season if accused of using during competition. Athletes don't want to risk it. I'd say that speed skaters probably have the biggest temptation to use a substance that might give them more explosive speed and endurance. But, again, most athletes don't want to risk their health or eligibility. Talent and hard work can take you wherever you want to go -- without the damage doping does on body or reputation.
