If you haven't visited the USFSA website lately, this is a good time to poke around.

First, take some time to glance over Grand Prix event play-by-plays. Skate America and Skate Canada details let you know who’s on top of their game in the world of figure skating this season. These competition news briefs are usually accompanied by great photographs of skaters caught in the act of being beautifully amazing.

Second, the fantasy skating challenge is now open for Round 2 picks. This is a fun game for skating aficionados. Choose who you think the top skaters will be at upcoming competitions, and receive points if those athletes actually place. The Fantasy Skating participant with the most points at the end of the rounds wins prizes and bragging rights.

Third, you have until Friday, November 9th to send in your questions to the pairs team of Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig. If chosen, a photo of yourself and your question could appear in a future issue of Skating Magazine.

Fourth, send away for United States Figure Skating’s DVDs of qualifying events. These recordings of specific skaters and sanctioned qualifying competitions cost from $35 to $55. You can also call (719) 635-5200 for questions about ordering.

Fifth, the world of synchronized skating was a little shaken at the last USFSA board meeting. Several judges resigned, and new rules regarding judge qualifications were approved and await ratification. Program time was amended to four minutes.

Also reported at the board meeting, the Sport Science Coaching Award will now be named for the late Pieter Kollen. Although a coach and former US pairs champion, his “K-Pick” skate blade is probably his most endearing legacy.

Sixth, last season’s Spokane Nationals won the awesome distinction of being deemed the “winner of the ‘Sports Event of the Year.’” Sports Travel Magazine rated the US figure skating competition #1 over the Super Bowl, Winter X Games, and NASCAR. That says more than enough about the USFSA event coordinating team and Spokane volunteers.

Seventh, the USFSA online store has several interesting items for sale. Show your skating spirit with warm athletic apparel. Clothing and trinkets make great stocking stuffers too. Training videos might be a sensible choice of holiday gifts for the hard-working figure skaters in your family.

The USFSA website continues to develop its news and photo content. It’s also striving to build and support a community or network of skaters and figure skating enthusiasts. Check back often with them to show your support for their efforts.
