This isn’t Kurt’s first time helping figure skaters design their programs. Yuka Sato, Tara Lipinski and Alissa Czisny also benefited from his talents.
Kurt and Evan will be creating Lysacek's short program for the upcoming season. While Evan has announced his free skate will be to Bizet's "Carmen Suite" and Rodion Shedrinand's "Carmen," he has yet to announce which music he will skate his short program to.
I'm a little concerned about the music he's chosen. Judges tend to look more favorably on figure skaters who expand their repertoire.
21-year-old Lysacek has skated to similar themes in recent years. He used Carmen for last year's Worlds & Olympics, following Gypsy Kings in the same season. He skated to "Espana Cani" in 2003 through 2005. Also, during the 2003-2004 season, his free was "Singing in the Rain."
Any skating enthusiast worth his or her salt will always remember Kurt's own tribute to the unparalleled tap dancer, Gene Kelly. Still, I hope Evan can push past what he already done, and pleasantly surprise the audience.
There is the: "If is ain't broke, don't fix it" clause that applies here. It's hard not to smile when Lysacek takes to the ice. He's the two-time (current) World bronze medalist, after all.
Hopefully Kurt, footwork master and dance aficionado, can help Evan reach new (or as Even would say: "Rad") heights in his program - and on the podium.
Remember, Kurt is credited as being one of the quadruple jump pioneers. See Kurt's latest moves during his "Gotta Skate" special.
Lysacek will be premiering his short program at Cup of China, November 9-12, 2006. You can receive an autographed picture of Evan -- probably in a matador's costume -- by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the following address:
